But What is Acne?

Well according to Wikipedia Acne or Acne Vulgaris, is a skin disease that occurs when hair follicles are filled up with oil from the skin and dead skin cells which cause clogging and that results in breakouts, on the face, parts of the chest and even the shoulders and the upper part of the back.

80% of people suffering from Acne is caused by genetics but the remaining 20% is believed to have been caused by lifestyle, diet, and hormonal changes in the body. There is another cause of Acne, the growth of a bacterium known as Cutibacterium Acne which is present on the skin can cause pores to clog up and result in breakouts.

Conventional Treatments For Acne

There are many forms of treatments for Acne the most common is the use of formulas that contain Benzoyl peroxide or Salicylic Acid which are applied directly onto the skin, in some case Antibiotics are prescribed, but because Acne breakouts can happen in many intervals, constant use of antibiotics can cause resistance and that means reduction in effectiveness of the medication.

So Doctors won’t prescribe Antibiotic therapy unless it’s absolutely necessary. In women, Birth Control pills can be used to treat acne especially if the breakouts are as a result of hormonal imbalance, which in many cases of Acne breakouts in Women and teenage Girls Hormonal imbalance is the cause.

How To Treat Acne Naturally

Because Acne attack can be triggered by many things, the people living with this condition live in fear, because you could have a breakout at any time although the breakouts tend to happen when you really need to look your best, like when you have a graduation or an important presentation at work, or when you about to get married.

A family member of mine had a breakout just days before her wedding and she was devastated, and the make up they used to try and fix the situation made things worse. So how can you treat your acne naturally and prevent breakouts?
MineralHygienics.com
The first thing you need to do is pinpoint your triggers, there are people who get breakouts as a result of being under pressure and being stressed out. other people find that they get breakouts after consuming some foods or sweets, there are people who will get a break out after eating Chocolates, or Cheese.

After you find which foods cause breakouts, try to either avoid those foods or cut down as much as you can, another thing is to always keep your skin clean, if you do wear makeup, remember to always remove all traces of makeup in the evening and give your skin a chance to breathe.

Use products that contain Antioxidants, try making your own masks at home, because this is a very good way of controlling what is going on your skin, because Acne prone skin is very sensitive, try to stay away from products that may aggravate your skin, instead try just making a mask with tomato, honey and cinnamon these three ingredients are very beneficial for your skin.

Tomato, Cinnamon, and Honey mask

The antioxidant that tomatoes contain and the antibacterial properties found in Honey and cinnamon makes this mask the best for your Acne prone skin. So just grab a fully ripe tomato, remove the seeds and then great the flesh on a small plate, then add 1 tablespoon of organic honey and a tablespoon of cinnamon powder.

Mix well and after cleansing your skin, apply the mixture generously live it on the skin for 20 minutes and then rinse with cold water, pat your skin dry and don’t apply any cream for about 3 hours just let your skin enjoy the feeling and the effects of the mask, repeat this treatment at least twice a week and you will see a lot of improvement on your skin.

Apricot Oil soothing remedy

Apricots as we discussed in our previous article, are very beneficial to the skin, you can read that article here, and the recipe shared there can be used to exfoliate the skin because by removing the dead skin cells and unclogging your pores, you will keep your skin clean and it can breathe which will help in preventing breakouts.

So, use 2 tablespoons of organic Apricot oil and half a cup of water, just plain water at room temperature, mix well and after cleansing your skin use a cotton pad to apply the mixture on your skin.

This treatment should be repeated twice a day it’s especially very good to apply the mixture just before you go to bed, that way your skin can absorb all that goodness while you sleep.

Apricot oil is rich in antioxidants and it also contains high concentration of vitamin C, which helps your skin to grow new and healthy skin cells, the fact that the oil is so light, makes it the favorite of many skincare companies, and most anti-aging products do contain apricot oil, because it’s very effective in reducing wrinkles.

So the light texture of this oil will make it easy for your skin to absorb and will not clog up your pore and as we have seen Acne breakouts are commonly triggered by clogging of the pores.

aloe vera is very good for Treating Acne

Because of the soothing and the healing properties found in aloe vera this plant is very helpful in Acne treatment and as a matter of fact, many Acne creams contain Alovera because it is rich in Salicylic Acid and sulfur, these two ingredients are used in Acne creams, so if you use the natural Aloe Vera, you will get the full benefit of this wonderful plant.

I actually grow my own Aloe Vera in a clay pot and I do use it a lot on my skin, I love it, aloe vera is said to have properties that fight inflammation and it helps heal wounds and it can even help in reducing scarring.

Its very easy to use Aloe vera, if you don’t have an Aloe Vera Plant like I do, then head over to your nearest organic product shop and grab a jar of pure organic Aloe Vera Gel, and just apply it on your skin twice a day, you will see results within ten days of constant use.

If you do have a plant, then just scrape the gel from the lief and apply it on your skin.

Diet And Supplements For Acne

The first thing you need to do is to invest in a good supplement that contains high amounts of Vitamin C, Zinc, DHA and the Omega fatty acids, by taking this supplements you will lower inflammation, strengthen your immune system and that means, you will be able to keep Acne Breakouts at bay.

You need to cut down on carbs and sugars because as we have seen these are common triggers of breakouts, make sure that your daily diet is rich in green leafy vegetables and rich in berries like raspberries, strawberries and other fruits, Garlic and onions are also a good source of anti-inflammation properties as well as antibacterial properties.

If you can’t stand the smell of the taste of raw garlic, then you can get them in tablet or capsule form.

Green Tea

Drinking green tea can help you a great deal when it comes to Acne, but better yet, you can apply it directly to your skin and it will help in fighting inflammation and it also contains antibacterial properties and antioxidants which will help your skin fight breakouts.

When choosing a face cream, try to find one that contains green tea and aloe vera, those two ingredients are very powerful in fighting Acne especially when used together. And when you are making a cup of green tea, why don’t you leave a little bit to apply on your skin? Just allow it to cool and then apply using a cotton pad directly onto the skin, leave it on for 15 minutes and then rinse it with cold water.

repeat this treatment 3 or 4 times a week.

Conclusion

Living with Acne can be very stressful, but with proper diet and lifestyle change, you can live a break out free life, and with the tips I have shared in this article, I hope you will find something that will work for you. I do sympathize with those living with acne because it’s very depressing.

So I say, find something that works for your skin and stick with it because an Acne prone skin is very sensitive and it can react to the slightest change.

  1. Timely article Rose!

I have this annoying acne behind my neck and I can’t go out much with a t-shirt because everyone can still see it when they walk behind me. These past few days I always wear my hoodie or collared t-shirt so that others can’t see it and maintain my confidence but man, is it annoying!

Definitely trying the Tomato, Cinnamon, and Honey combo trick, do you think I still need to wait 20 minutes if it’s not on my face but on my neck?

    • Hi Riaz, I am sorry to hear that you have a breakout on your neck, the silver lining for you is that it’s not on your face so you are able to hide it.

Anyway, to answer your question, yes you need to leave the mask on for at least 20 minutes to give your skin time to absorb the goodness of the mask then you will rinse it.

  2. Wow!!

I like this blog because, I am always amazed with the solutions your propose.

A mask of tomato, cinnamon and honey, I have never heard of anyone trying that mixture. Cinnamon and honey is pretty common, I use it now and then as a drink with warm water. But I never thought to use it as a mask. Yet, I completely agree with the impact of it on the acne area. After, reading, I keep on asking myself, why didn’t i think of it? LOL

    Thanks for another great discovery.

  4. Hello, In all my life I can say that I really haven’t had any issues with acne, I mean I’ll get a few bumps here and there but nothing that I would need medication for, however, there are a few people in my life that do get a lot of acne and sometimes medication does not work for them.

I think they would benefit greatly from this article, especially a friend of mine who likes making her own face masks, I am sure she will definitely love the tomato, cinnamon and honey mask because I don’t think she has tried this combination before.

I have sent her the link to this article so she can read it

  5. Thanks for bringing up fresh new ideas to naturally treating acne. I especially like to try the tomato, honey and cinnamon mask. It is something new to me. My 10-year-old daughter likes to imitate what I do and one big example is putting a face mask. It’s all natural so there’s nothing to worry about. it’s just mashed avocado or papaya with milk. I think we’re gonna have another favorite.

I always believe that treating acne must start with good hygiene, lots of greens and whatever we need to apply can be found in the garden or kitchen. Please make more of your natural beauty tips.
