Another possibility is the guy booking the flight for her and sending her the flight details, so obviously that part didn’t make sense to me.

I am a Kenyan myself and I am telling you, there is no such thing as you must pay up or you won’t get married, the dowry is something you sit down with the parents of the girl and listen to what they are asking for, then if you can’t afford to pay, you mention what you can afford to pay it’s just a symbolic gesture and it’s just a way of thanking the parents for allowing you to marry their daughter, that’s all it is, there is no such thing as bride price, people are not being sold in Kenya.
And while you are at it, don’t let them trick you into agreeing to pay the rest later, because you will be in debt forever, just agree to what you can afford to pay making sure you don’t insult them with a very small offer. And let that be the final dowry and while we are at this do not pick a member of the girl’s family to be your dowry negotiator and translator.
