Lend your Eyes to a visually impaired person with Be My eyes App

Be My Eyes App is changing the lives of visually impaired community.

what is this app and how does it work?

The mind behind this App is a 50 year old Danish guy called Jorgen Wiberg, the App is designed to use the camera on your phone so if you are a visually impaired person, all you need to do is download the app from appstore or google play and then when you need help, you just open the app and call.

You will be connected to a volunteer who will be able to assist you.

Well, since I am a volunteer, I will be covering the aspect of the app from a volunteer point of view.

I first heard about this App from a radio interview that was done with Mr Wiberg, I could’t believe it, I could’t believe that there is such an app so I went on my app store and searched Be My Eyes and sure enough it was there.

So I downloaded the app and I was very surprised to see that there are more than 1.7 million volunteers who had downloaded the app already.

The beauty of this app, is that it gives the visually impaired people confidence and courage to ask for help, because the chances of getting the same volunteer are very slim, so you can call as many times as you need to because you will get a different person each time.

The only problem is that there are not many visually impaired people using this technology and so my reason for writing this post is to spread the word among our visually impaired brothers and sisters so they can take advantage of this app and make their lives a little easier.

So if you know someone who can benefit from this app, please let them know, and if you would like to join the volunteer community please do so by downloading the app.

what kind of help does a volunteer provide?

It could actually be anything, from helping someone know the expiring date on a bottle of milk to helping someone find coffee, or help someone find shampoo and conditioner or find a tin of tomatoes. It could be anything, things that we take for granted.

The last call I got was from a guy in Russia who wanted me to read his temperature on his air con in his house. that was few weeks ago and I haven’t received any call since then. which means as a volunteer, you don’t really get many calls because as I said there are many of us.

  1. Wow, what an article and a fantastic App.

The amount of people in society with disabilities such as being visually impaired who struggle in silence as they don’t want to be a burden on others is huge. It is thanks to Apps like this that make life easier and more accessible to everyone. I will definitely be recommending this App to others.

    • Yes its very true, they don’t want to be a burden and so they just suffer in silence but it doesn’t have to be that way, with Be My Eyes app one can call 10 or 20 times and you will not get the same volunteer, so no need to struggle when help is available.

thank you for your comment and please share.

  2. Thank you Rose for sharing this post and this wonderful app.

I am confident that it will spread like wildfire since I certainly do believe this is a wonderful breakthrough to help visually impaired people.

I will check this app out and become a volunteer myself. As I can see this works worldwide when you also will receive a call even from Russia.

I am sharing your post for sure 🙂

    • Hi Sylvia, yes please share, yes you can receive a call from anywhere. On the app you have option to choose the language you would like to help in, so if you speak more than one, you can add all languages you speak and help people from all over the world. I was very surprised to find my native language there so I added it together with english and swahili which I speak.

  4. This is a really neat service. I work with several people who are visually impaired and live alone. Something like this could potentially allow them to stay in their homes longer. I will definitely be spreading the word!

  6. This is an awesome invention. I never knew such an app existed nor would I have ever thought of it. It’s ingenius, though, for someone to invent this and volunteer to help the visually impaired get around. I know a couple people who are visually impaired and could really use this app, so I’ll spread the word. Meanwhile, I share to my Facebook page as I’m sure there are people out there who know others who can use such a great invention. Thanks for sharing.
